No, I would not. I am in same situation as you find yourself at and I have convertible sports car with a 5 speed manual transmission, a four cylinder turbo charged engine. This car delivers about 30 MPG, has plenty of trunk for my needs and is nice to look at. This van is a work vehicle and you might get around 19 MPG. As to driving the wrong kind of vehicle, well, 16 year old boys are driving Chevy Silverado extended cab 4X4 trucks to school and back. Apparently getting 9 MPG is OK as long as they look "cool" or something. You are over thinking this issue. Most people do not know you and the ones that know you should understand your desire for this vehicle. Do as you wish.

I would drive a Ford or Chevy conversion or custom van but not a regular cargo van.

Absolutely. They are very cool and come in a variety of configurations, and can be easily customized with vinyl wraps. I probably would buy one as a second or third vehicle, not a daily driver. I also like the looks of Isuzu Low Cab trucks -- maybe for a fourth vehicle.

Personally I like to keep things simple. If I dont need it then why should I get it? In my experience a bigger vehicle not only uses more fuel but it also is harder and more expensive to repair. Harder because of the added weight and bigger bolts that are torqued down harder. But then again my four seat 1971 VW Beetle is twice what I need for the wife and I.

Only if I carried enough to need a van at least 1/4 of the time. If you only need the capacity 1-2 times a month it mat be more effective to rent one when you need it. So it depends how often you need the capability.
