white bread is spikes the blood sugar levels thereby causing excess energy which gets stored as fat. whole wheat isn't bad if you keep it in check and dont eat the whole loaf! a better choice would be veggies though...

No it is not bad for you and probably has a few more nutrients than white bread. And if you are running 4 miles 3 times per week why worry about bread making you fat since there is negligible fat in bread. You only get fat by eating an excess of fat. Just keep a high intensity in your runs and you wont have to worry about fat. Say like 8 minute per mile pace and faster.

Any grains in excessive amount will make you fat. Except whole wheat in moderation is fine.
