Anything you can do to help your console will ultimately increase its life, but the problem with hardware failure is its not always within your control to prevent it. Sometimes things break, its just the nature of technology. You can't know what kind of little defects your console may have had since it was first put together, take the PS4 and Xbox One hardware issues, there's nothing you can do about it they were just unlucky enough to get the few consoles that had hiccups in their manufacture. The older 360s are fairly notorious for RRoD'ing and, as long as you keep it relatively cool, you should be fine. But that doesn't necessarily mean you WILL be fine. So the real answer is; no one knows. Yes keeping it cool, away from liquids, away from where it may be knocked over/dropped and not playing it for 10 hours straight will help minimise any technical issues you may suffer, but it won't 100% guarantee you won't suffer them.

Obviously the better you treat something the longer it SHOULD last however hardware failures aren't under your control but things like moving it gently when you do move it will prevent things such as cables and components inside to become lose. Keeping it well ventilated will stop large amounts of heat building up (a big problem with the first 360's). Having it running for a while will also help as the fan will not only keep the system cool but it should also blow some dust out as well.
