If your battery is low that could be the problem. However it's surprising how many camera problems can be solved just by removing the battery, leaving it for a while and then replacing the battery. It's worth a try. A new or recharged battery is obviously going to be another worthwhile route to take.

As you tried manual focus and there was enough light then it was probably your battery. I'd keep a spare one charged just in case. Check with a recharged battery and if it still happens perhaps you are too near the subject. But I don't think that's the problem.

On Canon cameras, the camera's battery drives the lens' focusing motor. If your battery was drained, there's your answer. It might have had enough juice to run the electronics. But a motor has a higher demand. It's a good idea to have a spare battery with you at all times.
