The earth is round because it is NOT a solid thing but a conglomerate made of pieces that are self attracting because of gravity. The sphere is the lowest potential energy state of what is essentially a fluid. The sphere provides the least distance between atoms that are attracting the other atoms surrounding them, equally in all directions.

It's round from its own gravity. Gravity's force wants to pull everything towards its center. If a mountain got too high for example, the gravity would collapse it. Since this happens at every point on the surface in all orientations the result is a sphere.
