You have a failing output stage.

I fix Yamahas all the time, and they are generally pretty good receivers. That's why I own a Yamaha personally. But I suspect a loose connection within the receiver that a tech needs to located and fix - not a DIY repair. Heck, I have a Kenwood on my bench now with the same problem, and if I wiggle one connection within the receiver juuuuuuust right - it returns to normal. Take it to a shop you trust and tell them exactly what is happening. But do also keep in mind that a used HTR 5450 on eBay has been selling for under $50 plus shipping. Highest sold unit was $66. Keep your repair cost limit to $100 or less. When I worked as a bench tech (vs. on my own now) we did our best to keep the cost down as we'd rather fix it for cheap than just take the evaluation fee.
