If you are taking home $650 on a $700 paycheck, you aren't claiming "0". Yours may be one that is wrong.

You may want to check to make sure both of you are actually claiming 0, it seems as though you may be the one who is not claiming 0 if you are taking home 650 from 700. IRS could have made a mistake with the numbers on your tax forms if you recall claiming 0. The only other explanation would be wage garnishments or voluntary deductions. Hope this helps!

Yours is totally wrong. 1/3 is a nice rule of thumb if state, local, unemployment and SS are being taken out. I'd look hard at MY stub; you may be in for a shock at the end of the year.

How often are each of you paid? Sounds like something is badly wrong with yours.
Answer #5 | 19/12 2013 09:52
Something is drastically wrong with your withholding. The FICA taxes alone on $700 are $53.55. If only $50 is being withheld it's not enough to cover the FICA taxes let alone any income or other taxes. If you are paid bi-weekly, your net should be no more than $571.31. It would be less if your state has an income tax. Hers might be correct, depending upon how often she is paid and what state she lives or works in. To fully answer your question we'd need to know what state you live or work in and how often you are paid. Ditto for your g/f.

She is claiming 0 allowances on line 5. You are claiming "totally exempt" on line 7. These are totally different things! Do what she's doing. She is going to have a pretty good April. You not so much.
Answer #7 | 19/12 2013 11:03
claiming 0 means they take the maximum they are allowed to take on your gross something is wrong with your withholding, FICA alone is 7.65% of your $700 is $53.55!
Answer #8 | 19/12 2013 10:15
Because of how she and you have your W4's filled out. If you have claimed zero, then your checks are being WAY under withheld and you will have an issue come tax time. All they are withholding is the FICA taxes, no state and federal. Be ready for a HUGE tax bill at tax time. What is your year to date federal and state withholdings and year to date pay?
