It makes more sense to eat meat. Meat gives you a lot more calories compared to calorie expenditure than fruits and nuts do. Before the advent of agriculture humans were interested in survival, the less you have to work for it, the more calories you get, the better it is. The composition of the diet would depend on geographical location and season. Some tribes ate more nuts and fruits because there was more of that around, others ate more meat because plants weren't available during colder seasons etc.

The paleo diet is not comprised of meat. When you look at a paleo food pyramid, on the bottom you have vegetables and fruit, above that is meat, then it's nuts and seeds and oils and herbs.

paleo diet is a lot of meats and veggies. these two food groups make up the majority of your diet (if you follow paleo).
