We could have a langua franca of road law but doing this would cost so much that's believe it or not its better to just leave it alone and learn the country that your visiting rules.

The reasons data back hundreds if not thousands of years and allegedly involve horses, whips, carriages and mule teams. Some countries have changed over, e.g. Canada in about 1901, usually before there were that many cars on the road. If you think there are a lot of accidents now, it's nothing to what you'd get if you suddenly switched an entire country full of cars and older drivers.
