They contain a lot of fresh fruit, yogurt, milk. All are expensive ingredients. Plus they have to pay someone to make it for you. You should get a blender and make them at home yourself. My daughter has one every day for breakfast. You can make one in just a minute or two.

Because you and everyone wants them. Mike

I reckon because not that many people are fans of them so they will have to raise the price in order to make enough profit, maybe they buy expensive ingredients too and need to make back the money. Just a thought.

Clever marketing. It's implied that smoothies are healthy because they are "made with real fruit". (When a product says "made with..." it's a good indication that there is likely enough to say that the real ingredient is in there.) Therefore, at places like Starbucks the smoothie fast "food" chain, McDonald's, etc., they charge more as a marketing gimmick. However, once the milk the sugar and other stuff is added (including artificial colors and flavors), it's not very healthy. One might as well eat fruit flavored ice cream or ice cream with little fruit bits in it. I just eat whole fruit or if I do make a smoothie, frozen fruit with a bit of plain soy milk. (I used to practically live on smoothies when I was pregnant with my now six-year-old. Then the blender died and I started to eat the frozen fruit without mixing it.)
