The standard of education in South Africa is quite high, actually (in proper schools, of course). We had a few Americans and even a Japanese exhange student in my school and they struggled a bit with the academic standard. I also had friends who went to Cornell and Yale in America and it wasn't really that hard for them. But, American masters programmes at university tend to be much better than South Africa ones. Standards in America are just different. Also, they approach their school work in a different way. The unfortunate thing is that an American high school certificate is probably valued more than a South African matriculation, even though ours might be of a higher standard.

All schools are not the same in the USA My kids moved from one school district to another when we bought a new home. The new schools district was very different and much more challenging to them. Also depends on the teachers. Teachers make their own exams and have their own expectations of their students.
