Because they have not come down from the clouds yet to realize a lavish wedding does not mean 'happily ever after'. Working on your marriage every day does that, with laughs and sorrows alike. Personally, I kept it down, really down, and saved the money for other things instead of getting in a huge debt or expecting other people to pay for the expenses, aka family.

I got married on the beach and it was family and close friends only her and I paid for it our self

Not all weddings are big weddings actually. Often there are smaller weddings of less than 100, 60, 40 or even smaller. Some weddings are simple and easy while others are complicated. Families are a big issue and sometimes it isn't that the bride wants a big wedding it is because her family or his family or both families do. We had a small wedding, about 80 people most of which were family from both sides and really close friends. Did it on a budget and with everything it was less than $2K.
