Stylistically, the style that Thurman is close to becoming complete in has almost always handled the style that Porter is close to becoming complete in. The boxer-puncher knows how to fight against & nullify the swarmer (Kell Brook vs. Shawn Porter as a recent example). Thurman has far better outside offense and is sound from the mid-range. He also has better back foot defense than Porter (it's not great, but it's better than Shawn's). With his lateral movement, long jabs, and setup power counters, I think that Thurman is going to stop Porter's segmented "weave-gain angle- get inside" strategy. Porter's technique (as a swarmer) is not smooth enough and unpredictable enough to make this a 50-50 fight. I blame this on the fact that he does not fight many times a year (something you definitely have to do in your prime if you are using that swarming-inside fighting style). Thurman wins by wide UD to hopefully set up one of the most interesting fights versus Kell Brook.

This is a tough one!!! And, I think its a great fight for boxing, so I am surprised it got made. Thurman is the favorite at first glance. He is BIGGER, TALLER, and LONGER. He also undoubtedly packs a bigger punch! It just "feels" like he "should" win. But, upon closer look... Thurman winning becomes less obvious. Porter has faced better competition, than Thurman has. Thurman hasn't really fought anybody of worth. Porter beat Devon Alexander and Adrian Broner, and while that definitely doesn't make him a world-beater, its a LOT better than Robert Gurrero and Soto Karass!!! Also, Porter put up a solid performance against Kell Brook, even though he came up short. Plus, Porter has trained incredibly for this fight, since it got pushed back, due to Thurman's car accident. He's had so much more time to get in unbelievable shape, and looks better than he ever has! Thurman on the other end, due to the car accident, has had a lack-luster training camp, and has had to progress slowly in training to protect his whip-lashed neck. Which makes you wonder how he'll hold up to hard head shots!? Thurman doesn't look as fit as we're used to seeing him either. Then, again... Thurman absolutely does have the power to take Porter out, with a well placed punch! And, its not unthinkable that he gets that at some point. Porter is far less likely to do the same, which means he's looking to outwork him, which may get him the decision, but will create opportunities for Thurman along the way?! My final call is....... Thurman, by late KO, or UD. The reason is... Thurman is a far better fighter on the outside, and Kell Brook was very good at exploiting that against Porter when they fought. Porter, did NOT adapt to that, and he lost because of it. I think Thurman's better on the outside than Kell Brook is/was. Also, I think Thurman is likely to hurt Porter, which would likely tip the scales in his favor. With all that said, I would not be surprised if Porter ekes out a gritty decision. -
