Clearly, Reserved, the explanation was not "clear" or the batteries question would not have been posed. So I don't think that is an "ignorant" question. As for the "per hour" question, my family had a small cuckoo clock that popped out every 15 minutes to 'cuckoo,' and would do the 'cuckoo' per number of hours on the hour. Clearly, this was only confusing at 1 o'clock. The cuckoo clock is a unique gift, to be treasured certainly, but in this digital age, I believe those with a solid knowledge of this timepiece are a very small minority. So, I think they were possibly both appropiate questions.

If it is wound and runs for 8 days, it doesn't use any batteries at all. It has a spring to drive the clock and would normally be wound once a week. I suppose someone might make a hybrid with spring mechanism and battery sounder but it seems odd. What the sound is will depend on the model - obviously doing the hours is more complicated than just going off once an hour.
