I'd pick the 335xi, because I already have a 528i and an X3 (3.0), . . . but that's me. You're you. What you should be telling us is more about WHAT YOUR NEEDS are. Are you single, family, city, country, sea level, mountains, lots of freeway, lots of city streets. You need to help us to help you. Pricing; the 530i is about $12K, the 335xi is about $23K. Based on this, you have a bunch of options. If you're willing to cough-up $25K (or more), I'd keep looking. The 530i is a car that will unfortunately depreciate BADLY. If you don't care, and since you've got a lot more cash than this costs, and if you intend to KEEP the car then maybe. The maybe depends on what your needs are. Family? Good reason, but may not be enough to keep this one. At $13K, this is a mediocre car. If you're getting an awesome deal - $5k then I understand, it's low risk. The 335xi is a FAST AWD. This is a street version of a rally race car, and can be modified to be a monster. The motor has the modern engine technology and is amazingly powerful as well as dependable. Problem is; it's so much car that you're far more likely to CRASH it than the 530i. Insurance will take a hit. If you have a NEED for the Xi and can realistically see yourself driving it as a different person (life changes your needs), then go for it, otherwise, KEEP LOOKING. Good luck!

Do you need All-wheel drive? There is a fuel economy penalty. Do you prefe/needr 2 doors or 4 doors? All things being equal the 530i 3.0 inline 6 is a very good combination, IMHO the best for the 5 series overall. It is not a rocket but had decent power for most people. 2004 was the first model year for that body style and the I-drive takes some familiarization. The 530i will have a better ride. Most likely it will have conventional tires as opposed to the 335xi which likely has run-flat tires. Very expensive to replace! Very hard almost harsh ride. Look at the sidewall on the 335i and look for the letters RSC inside a circle.
