I've been to Athens a lot over the last couple of years cause my daughter goes to school there. Personally, I think it's a really cool town and I could see living there, regardless of having my kid there. By virtue of it being a college town, there's music, art and plenty to do. Excellent restaurants, too. (Check out the Five and Ten.) Athens is bigger than I originally thought and not just for students. The closer you get to school, the more money you'll spend for substandard housing. (Avoid a company called CityBlock at all costs!!) If Decatur isn't too far for you, I like it there, by the Square. To my surprise, I also got a feel for Lawrenceville. There are some neat old houses, decent restaurants and a lovely community theater. Good luck!

I used to live in the Lawrenceville area and it's not a bad area to live in, not too big not too small. There are good roads and it's kind of in a central location. You can get to the mountains or the lake or into Atlanta with just a short drive. I don't know how big of a city you want to live in but if you were looking at Decatur you may want to look into Augusta. It's just a little bit further to drive by a few miles (on the other side of Athens though) but it's a nice place to live and close to the ocean.
