I've never had dessert after dinner or as a part of a meal in my life because I'm full after dinner and don't see a purpose in eating sweets.Meanwhile my siblings usually have icecream or cookies after dinner. Its a preference, not a requirement that one must 'learn'.

I never eat desert. Maybe some pie, and coffee an hour or so later. If I'm eating steak and potatoes I would rather a bigger steak, over some cake.

I take it Mommy didn't give you any pie because you wouldn't eat your vegetables. "Dessert" is only a part of a meal if one chooses to make it a part.
