Your starter may not be fully engaging the flexplate, or your flexplate may have a flat spot on it. The starter is an electric motor that has a small gear on a shaft that, when energized with power from the battery, the shaft extends and spins, thus shoving the gear into the geared outer edge of the flexplate at the same time turning the flexplate and, because the flexplate is bolted to the crankshaft of the motor, turns the motor, causing the engine to start. I hope I didn't get too in-depth on you, just trying to completely explain why you are hearing the noise. I would suggest removing the starter and taking it to a shop to be tested.
