Air bags are called a Supplemental Restraint System for a reason. They help protect you but the primary restraint system is still the seat belt. So the first question would be is the driver and occupant(s) wearing the seatbelts

They would not "fail", but they might not be adequate to protect you.

They might save your life but you ARE going to be injured. The human body cannot decelerate that fast and escape totally unharmed.
