Better than we think. Most of the senators and rich people were literate, as well as some common folk. However, most would think this would be 5% or less, but in reality about 15% were literate.

Very few, which is why there are very few if any written records of things like no parish records of marriages, births etc ............... if you look on census even as late as 1901 in some countries you will see a column which asks if the paerson can read/write and many adults couldn't.............
