Home Depot sells 3/4" finished birch plywood. It stains nice, and costs about $25.

Oak veneer plywood, with real oak banding on any exposed edges. Pine bracing anywhere it isn't seen. All stained to match.

Any solid wood for a desk that size will be quite expensive, and I don't know if you can get plywood 4m long ? My choice would be 2 pieces of 8 x 4 plywood cut to size, sanded down and stained to look nice on top. It's great that you want to make something nice for your son, and my bet is that he'll love it just as much however you make it.

Definitely oak or maple. Pine is too soft and will show writing impressions.

Look at the desks and tables at She uses inexpensive construction lumber and they look great. I recommend making 2 or 3 desks so you can move them later.
