Without a good teacher, you will struggle and beat yourself up for FAR longer than if you had one-to-one lessons. Yes, there are people who taught themselves - but MOST who try, quit, because they are frustrated and not making any progress - even THEY can tell that they stink. So if you know 6 stubborn people who watched YooToob videos until their eyes fell out, and now can play - wait for it - Smoke on the Water!!!! - then there are a hundred who quit.

Two things: Quickest means in the shortest amount of time, best accomplished with a live tutor. Without a tutor means non-interactive training, which is the slowest. So, then it's how can I quickly learn from the slowest method? Meanwhile: You really can't escape needing others to help, whether it's from their books, CD's, videos & net resources (which are not exactly "uniform in quality"), or simply listening to recorded music. The only difference is how near or far that person is. And then there's having that person in the room with you, able to give you immediate help. You pays your money and you takes your choice, but "resistance is futile". You will be tutored - you just choose how.

I leant and mastered the guitar by myself and I believe any instrument can be learnt without a tutor. It depends on your self-motivation if you wish to master it. There is a lots of free videos online that you can learn from so take advantage of it.
