The traditional yoga pants of India are not stretchy at all like those sold in the United States. They're loose fitting thin cotton. They come up to the waist with elastic and/or a drawstring waist. Some have elastic at the ankles as well. Sweatpants are thick stretchy fabric with the inside like terry cloth.

Taken from: "Asked: Whats the difference between sweat pants and yoga pants?" ...what is the difference between sweatpants and yoga pants. Which one is more comfy and overall better. Answered: ...I think the main difference between sweatpants and yoga pants is the material. Sweatpants are usually made of cotton or something else fuzzy and stretchy. Yoga pants are usually polyester/spandex and kinda shiny as opposed to fuzzy. I like wearing yoga pants around the house, myself, because I always overheat in sweatpants. Also, if your yoga pants are black you can totally get away with wearing them to nice places and pretending they're dress pants, and you can be ultra-comfortable! Answered: ...Sweat pants are for exercising or just for a comfy day they are loose fitted and yoga pants are made for exercise as well. They are tight fitted but very stretchy and comfortable. I would say yoga pants are the most comfortable. Because they are so stretchy they move with your body.

I have some of each and bought the yoga pants mainly just to see what they were ... they were in the exercise clothing section. They are so comfortable ... a stretchy knit but they don't get baggy. They are loose but well fitting and very comfortable. Sweatpants are a thicker material, baggier, and even though they stretch, they stay stretched ... not going back to the original shape like yoga pants do. Sweats are comfortable and also have a softer inside against your skin.
