Kindle Paperwhite. $120.00 Or plain old Kindle, $60.00. If you got the extra 60, go for the Paperwhite.

The cheapest version is the "Basic Kindle" wherey you get the very basic features. "Kindle Paperwhite" gives you better features I.e the built-in light, better screen, contrast and comes with better processor for faster page turns and better battery life. "Kindle Fire HD" is just 20 bucks over the Kindle Paperwhite and gives the extra options like you can also listen audio books, watch movies, surf web and stuff that a tablet can be used for, but comes with mid-range features I.e dual core processor, 1Gb ram, 1280*800 HD display etc. See this detailed comparison on which Kindle is best for you: Kindle Paperwhite would be the best option, if you want it strictly for reading purpose, but if you would like the few extra features like watching movies, playing games and other stuff then you should get the Kindle Fire HDX as the best option. Hope this helped!

Then buy just the basic Kindle for $69. All it will do well is reading. If you want something a bit fancier, with a touch screen and light, there's the Kindle Paperwhite for $119. But ocne terhe, you are olny $20 aawy form a Knilde Frie HD, wcihh is an exleenclt telbat /eraeedr at $139. (that last paragraph is an experiment. I heard once that if you keep the first and last letter the same, but scramble the internal letters, the reader can still read it really having to think much about it.
