Ice is best for injuries and sore muscles for the first 48 hours to decrease the inflammation. However, lower back pain seems to be the exception because the pain isn't caused from injury but rather multiple issues from the area holding so much of the wieght of your body and the muscles having spasms and becoming tight which can be extremely painful and random, in which case heat would be better. Heat relaxes the muscles in the lower back which decreases the pain. Ice really won't help much for lower back pain because it isn't usually from an injury. If you don't believe me just try.

Heat when it's the lower back. Ice is for injuries, lower back pain is usually from a muscle randomly freaking out because you bent over to pick up your soap bar in the shower or something random like that. Heat will relax the muscle and make it calm down. Ice will still work, but not as well.
