It's just an acronym, Wireless Fidelity. Wifi applies to both (Local Area Networks) LAN and WAN (Wide Area Networks). For example, you can use Wifi to band LANs together where you can't run network cables. A set of IEEE standards in the 802.11 spectrum applies to network-based WiFi devices.
