shah (شه) + mir (میر) <= shaah (شاه) + amir (امیر) - originally form "amir e shaah" amir = master, commander, leader [of the army] (an Arabic word) shaah = king Means commander of king's army. And the "i" at the end is the most common suffix used for Persian surnames. These surnames are in fact adjectives created by the adding suffix "-i" to person names, location names or other names. sword = shamshir (شمشیر) not shahmir!
