grant explained it perfectly, my father worked in the ER and thats exactly how the hours are. not to mention being under pressure for the whole duration of those 12 hours. you save one guy and the next one arrives. then it happens you cant save this one and you have to deal with the family and potential law suits. its a very stressfull environment and you have to realy love your job and be able to keep your cool

Very bad, like almost every doctor, you will have a 10-12 hour work day, you will be on call often, and with weird hours, like 6pm to 6 am, it is much worse as a resident, but as an attending you still have to teach the resident by doing the same calls chedules they do.

All fresh doctors and internists are expected to keep the ER for the first 23 hours after the patient arrives to the hospital, while the senior doctors or consults come to visit them twice to four times a day, or as needed. As a junior doctor in a 100-bed hospital with only one other doctor (OBG), I used to work one day including the night shift for that day, and the other doctor used to work the next day, including the night shift. We worked together in case of serious cases, emergency surgical procedures, or multiple emergency cases. In an 8-hour shift system, there are usually more than one doctor in each shift, and the hospitals have more than 100 beds. The lifestyle of the ER doctor requires that the doctor must take calls anytime during a 24-hour day. We usually grab sleep only when time permits, or when an OFF-day is granted. The alteration in sleep/awake pattern is permanently altered over time, and a retired ER physician like myself does tend to awake for no reason at 01:00 AM (just past midnight) and on finding this question at around 5:00 AM does answer it as best as I can. Presently, I take only day calls, and keep the OPD in the mornings.

Long shifts that rotate through out the 24 hour day. They do vary from 8-12 hours in length but if you have patients you may not be able to leave until they are stable, admitted, transferred etc. You will do days, nights, weekends, holidays and have back up call. There are also meetings and other assigned duties. They can be incredibly busy-say over 200 patients in a medium ER. You do everything and you do not know what will come in. Could be an ear ache or a stroke. You need to be able to do procedures (intubate, chest tubes, suture etc), read xrays, CT scans, ECGs, interpret lab tests, etc. Think fast and accurately and move those patients. People complain and act out a great deal in the ER. A few docs have even been shot at. Its a chaotic environment.
