The only difference is that lovers have decided to cross the physical boundaries, and this can either positively or negatively affect the friendship that is in place. Personally, I prefer to be friends with my prospective mate, and have the physicality of the relationship develop, if it is possible. If it appears that boundary cannot be crossed, for a myriad of reasons, you still have your friendship.

You can be a good friend but not a lover but if you're a lover you are naturally also a good friend... Easy
