I've never had much luck with Brothers, and most of the kids I taught seem to do better with Janomes -- in this price range, I'd consider something like the Janome 2212 or the S-950, or the Juki HZL-27Z or HZL-35Z, Here's my thoughts on machines for beginners to intermediates: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtVc8znRrlRdYqlm02KFETbty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100423044254AAnGzFy&show=7#profile-info-OKJf8nHFaa and why I'm not happy with cheap new machines: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111020035301AAowAnQ

Cheap sewing machines may not be the best machine for a beginner to buy. A middle of the road machine will perform better with consistency and less wondering "what did I do wrong". Look for a better quality used one and try it if possible. Check out http://www.pinterest.com/besttoppicks/best-sewing-machines-for-beginners/ for some good tips.
