Please disregard the negative comments. The job opportunity depends on where you live. I live in Kentucky, where elementary schools are accountable for their Arts and Humanities, Practical Living, and Vocational Studies programs. 23% of a schools' rank is determined by these programs. They are REQUIRED to be taught at the elementary level, whether that be through integration or self-contained "specials." In most cases, it is easier to hire a "specials" teacher. In my district, the related arts teachers are on the same pay-scale as the regular-ed teachers. Look into certification requirements for your state. In Kentucky, one can teach elementary art by obtaining: -an art education degree, certified in grades K-12 OR -receiving elementary education certification.

Sadly these days art is one of the things that seems to get cut from school budgets, so most art teachers only teach part time. I know one art teacher who teaches at one school on Mondays and Wednesdays, another school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and waitresses on Friday nights.
