Both are very responsable jobs however the ships captain will have more responsibility and higher pay.Being the ships chief engineer will require you to be degree qualified in marine engineering. Both positions will take many years of study and it will take many years for you to progress through the ranks and be promoted.

It all depends on where and in what field your expertise is. If you are highly technical and into engineering then he aswer is a Chief Engieer, if you are noy=t then possibly a ships Master. To answer the specifics of your question as a master you will be on a slightlyhgher salary than an engineer of equal standing and seniority. Stress, I can only answer from experience a ships master is under greater stress than the chief engineer, the master having the ultimate responsibility for the ship , crew and cargo. Responsibilility the master is the person wo holds the ultimate responsibiity for all on board. Outlook and life style, there is no differential between the two. from a purely personal point of view, my first command was at the age of 32 and I retired on my 65th birthday. I have in all those years very rarely considered my Chief engineer any the less than myself. nearly all have been excelent technicians and have offered me the most excellent of technical advise.

The engineer is responsible for the engines. The captain is responsible for everything. This is reflected in the pay and everything else.
