Your question should first be answer with this: "What is a processor?" A processor or central processing unit (usually called just a processor or CPU for short) is the brain or main component of a computer. The faster and typically more expensive, the better and more powerful it is. There are two main companies that make consumer level processors, Intel, and AMD. Intel is by far in the lead on processors and produce some of the fastest, powerful, and most expensive ones made. They are arguably the best CPU maker today. AMD is a more budget conscious company, and produces cheaper (but slower and less powerful processors) than Intel. *On a side note – more cores don’t equal more power. AMD seems to focus on making more cores, Intel on speed and efficiency. But for the average user (not a gamer or what is called computer enthusiasts) AMD has many good choices that will work just fine. Just FYI to make sure you don't get confused, there are two main companies that make discrete graphics cards, and they are AMD and Nvidia. This is a different division than the CPU part, but is the same AMD corporation.
