3rd generation Toyota 4 Runner. It's an indestructible car, very solid and reliable and it comes with a 2.7 I4 engine or a 3.5 V6 engine so it won't kill you in the pump.

1995 ford explorer. can get a good one for like $2000 or less. the 4.0 engine will last forever. they get about 15 mpg combined city/highway.

The 4Runner or the old Pathfinders. The Isuzu Rodeo is fine too but it is hard to find one.
