When falling from the air it is sticky and warm and will make a cast of the body, look at mount Vesuvius and Pompeii. If it enters the lungs it will become solid and suffocate you.

It would depend on the type of ash and how far one was from the eruption. A pyroclastic ash flow would indeed incinerate a human body, but an ashfall many miles away would not burn a person, but breathing the ash would wind up killing a human. The animals that died from an ashfall in prehistoric times in Nebraska died from inhaling the ash, they did not die from being burned.

Volcanic ash is not dangerous unless you breathe it in or eat it. No, its not like fire because it has cooled.
