Though I agree with SmartAZ about the misuse of the word soul, I think we could talk about spirit instead. Whatever it is that connects us to a higher plain than our daily lives is what Poe means by soul. What Poe is saying is two fold: 1. Art is the production of what our senses tell us about Nature. Something more knowledgeable in us filters our the impurities of our (contaminated!!??) senses. That word contaminated is a word of my own use. I use it because if our senses were perfect, we would be able to reproduce exactly what we see in Nature. 2. The second sentence is really a summary of what I have said about the word contaminated. Because we cannot reproduce exactly what is in Nature, we do not deserve to use the term artist in relation to us.

What we call "art" is shallow and flimsy attempt to interpret of the full glory of creation. God is the only true artist.
