As Murphy's law states, if something can go wrong, it will. That means any part of an animal can potentially malfunction. If the malfunction is heritable (i.e. caused by a mutation), then it will likely be eliminated by natural selection. However, in some cases, the loss of a function is not deleterious and may even be adaptive, and the entire species and their descendants can be "disabled." For example, the common ancestor of apes, monkeys and humans had a mutation that cause it to lose its ability to manufacture vitamin c. Normally such a mutation would be deleterious and it would be eliminated by natural selection. However, since this species was eating so much fruit that it did not make any difference. In fact, the loss of the ability to synthesize vitamin c actually saves it and its descendants from having to manufacture something that is unneeded. Similarly, a bird that is born without the ability to fly would be eliminated by natural selection, but when a bird finds itself on an island without ground predators, losing the flight muscles actually becomes an advantage because it allows the bird to save a lot of energy, since flight muscles eat up a lot of energy.
