He meant the culture (as in your cultural imprinting) is an impediment to really understanding what is going on in the world.

Culture is imaginary. Today it's thigh gaps... years ago it was love handles. Culture changes and puts images in people's minds that never need to be there to begin with. Culture creates people where as people should create culture. It messes us up.
