It all depends on supply/demand and what you bring to the business.
NEVER tell your employer you want a raise to buy a car or anything personal like that. You have to tell them what's in it FOR THEM if they give you a raise. Tell them how you are always on time, do a great job, more than your share, are helping make them more money than other employees because you x,y,z....

Why are you worth more than minimum wage? What can you say to show you know how to work hard not just more hours? Do you have management experience that a new worker wouldn't have or something else making you worth a 1.75 more than the next guy?
Everyone wants more money but only those worth more get it.
