In my personal experience: The best hand down is the Eclipse head units. High voltage output to subwoofer, japanese components vs, chinese. Easy to setup parametric equalizers, and if you have subwofer, and amps, the crossover is good. The codec for MP3 is one of the best. Alpine is the easiest choice, even though the lower end units are very hard to setup to sound good. Their MP3 codex not as good as Eclipse. Pioneer, their preciest units are what you want. Stay away from cheap. I also, had very good experience with some clarions, the most bang for the bucks. Stay away from the low end units.

Ive had all of them and kicker is the clearest and loudest I had, then Kenwood is 2nd best sounding one that ive heard the settings are already to their best to sound loud and clear.

They're all good, Pioneer are probably the top in terms of sound quality but they'll also cost more for a similar spec. The Pioneer AVIC HU's are well rated

All are good and it comes down to personal preference. Best is to listen to them all on the same set of speakers to see if there are any variations in sound which you like or don't like. I myself am an Alpine fan.
