The February, 2013 edition of LA Magazine is the "Hidden Gems" edition. Even as a native Angelino who gets out and about often. I found some new things. Hope you can find a copy of it:

If the lost city of angels had no tourist traps it would still be a desert. Beaches, Disneyland, knots berry farm, wax museum, labrea tar pits, all the movie studio tours are there to bring in the cash. The only thing that is really free is the beaches there is quite a few of them. You can drive your car from San Diego to Long Beach or head east into the desert its not that far away, see cactus and sage brush and Joshua Tree Monument

visit catalina pch or mulholland...visit the arboretum...

To meet people is from West Hollywood to Beverly Hills, take Sunset and go, and you will see the jungle of LA from 7pm to 2am.
