Hi Cichlids do have very vibrant colors, but I would not suggest you get them for a 20g. These fish are extremely aggressive as they fight for dominance and females. The minimum is a 55g tank the best ranges from 100-150g or bigger. For your 20g I would suggest 10 Cardinal tetras or any schooling fish of your choice (Dinos, Endlers, other tetras ect). 1 Dwarf gourami 6 albino copycats (or any kind of Cory cat except peppered) These fish need sand as a substrate. Some shrimp if your fish don't eat them. Shrimp look really cool and if you plan to have a planted tank they are going to eat most of your algae. Here Plug in your numbers and your desired fish: If you plan to get Cardinals they like a planted tank (start thinking about plants if you have not ventured into them yet they are very fun to have and make the tank look really nice):

Swordtails, dwarf gouramis, lyretail mollies, other livebearers such as platys and African dwarf frogs can all be kept alone or in small groups and are bright colorful interesting fish that will fit in a 20g A small school of albino cories, long skirt tetras, long fin minor tetras, small loaches, or some other brightly tetra would also be interesting. I myself have Black skirt tetras, cardinal tetras, and cory catfish in a 25g and they are all very hardy fish from my experience. Remember not to overstock.
