Have you ever heard of "Magic Formula Investing"? If not, take an hour or two and read hedge fund manager Joel Greenblatt's book "The Little Book that Beats the Market". It is a simple, concise explanation of a screening strategy that produced over 30% annual returns between 1988-2004, and has continued to outperform the market after its publication. The official site for the strategy is here: There is also my site, MagicDiligence, that thoroughly researches stocks in these screens and highlights the best investment opportunities at any given time. Whether you decide to use the strategy or not, read a little about it and see if this kind of investing is for you. Historically it has been a simple way to get significant outperformance over an index tracking fund.

If you've never invested before, don't start with stocks. Consider investing into mutual funds or ETF's to learn how investing works. Choose a low cost online broker like TradeKing or Scottrade so you can get your feet wet. I opened an account with Scottrade and was impressed with their customer service. I'm sure other outfits like TradeKing and Etrade are similar.
