Those transmissions are bullet proof for the most part. That's the good news. The bad news is there is a minor problem with a thing called the "lock-up solenoid". It is the torque converter lock-up solenoid (TCC Solenoid) and they have a history of sticking "on" which keeps the trans in "lock-up" mode so it won't downshift to a lower gear when when exiting the freeway. That sort of thing. The first time it happened to me it felt like there was actually someone behind me pushing my car. I actually looked behind to see if someone had rear-ended me. But all it was, was the trans never came out of "lock-up" mode and so the trans was hydraulically locked in third gear. The engine will die at low rpms in that condition and you can NOT re-start it in that condition. You can shift into neutral to restart the engine, but the engine will, die when you attempt to put it in drive. That's because no engine can start out in third gear. You have to wait until it cools down which allows the solenoid to come out of lock-up mode. can temporarily fix it so you can get home in what's called "limp home mode". You can do that by reaching down and disconnecting the electrical connector to the lock-up solenoid. Look up it's location on the Internet. Your car will run normally but the trans will not lock-up which will make your gas mileage somewhat worse because of running in a slippage mode all the time. So you should get the solenoid replaced so it will all run normally again. It's a cheap and easy repair. Replacing the lock-up solenoid is NOT a trans rebuild. It is a simple solenoid which costs less than $50 dollars I believe. In fact I think mine cost $14 dollars. Something like that. I only had to replace this minor part once in 200,000 miles. Other than that, these transmissions are bullet proof. Good luck.
