It was true of Germany and Japan

Of course not. According to that idea, no country, anywhere in the entire world prospered. This theory is a nonstarter.

The Japanese and the Germans both prospered more than the British or the French at the end of the day. Funny how the losers ended up with the strongest economies. The Soviets prospered initially despite enormous losses. Controlling/influencing most of Eastern Europe and becoming a superpower.

Answer #6 | 22/12 2013 23:46
If by prospered you mean not lying in ruins from war than yes. Almost every country besides the US and Canada that was involved in world war two, was invaded and bombed. Countries like Germany, Poland, Russia, Japan etc. lied in ruins. Germany was constantly bombed by the allies, Poland was utterly destroyed by both the Germans and the Russians. Russia was bombed and almost destroyed by the Germans. Japan was bombed repeatedly by American and British bombers. Meanwhile Canada and United States remained secluded and its people didn't cower in fear everyday from constant bombing and fighting going on in their home.

America was one of the few countries left intact by the war. All of Europe was devastated by it. It took years just to remove the rubble and rebuild the towns. In Germany an entire generation of men was literally wiped out. 5.5 Million men were killed, another 700,000 were crippled. Of the over 600,000 soldiers in Soviet POW camps only 8,000 would ever see home again. The only ones that lived to tell about it were the 500,000 or so in American POW camps. As such for the following ten years or so the fertility rate in Germany dropped like a stone. Thousands of girls literally went looking for a young American Soldier to take her away from all this..France and Italy were not much better. In Eastern Europe the German Army had confiscated over 700,000 head of cattle leaving the people to starve, the horses were taken in similar numbers. Needless to say their farms were unable to produce very little for several years.

The countries that were barely involved in the war prospered the most. Look at scandinavia...
