The reason Alice's Mad Hatter was mad was because of mercury poisoning. The hatters used a mercury compound to stiffen the felt hats they made. Mercury is a significant neurotoxin to humans, as well as varmints.

If sounds like a bad idea to me. Mercury persists in the environment long after the pests are gone. Pesticides must be based on compounds which will break down, not on elements of the periodic table.
