You can do it for one day or two. But to do it everyday, I don't think so. You will be so tired that it will be unsafe for you to drive.

It's just about 10 hours of driving (5 each way). Days are 24 hours long. Gives you 14 hours left over. If this is for a job or for a long period of time you are crazy to consider it. You should rent a room for cheap and stay there during the week and return home on the weekends. Looks like you could fly each way in a little over an hour. I live in Connecticut , I have been to Portland in about 4 hours and am a bout 90 minutes from midtown, with no traffic. So 6 1/2 hours by car with no traffic each way, that is not reasonable to do every day if you plan to work and sleep. You can check Amtrak, NYC to Boston then to portland. Bing maps claims 307.3 mi, 4 hr 42 min driving if your doing this week days plan on 6 hours plus by car.

Look up the route on It will give you the shortest route and the estimated driving time. This trip will take 12 hours return if you do not stop. Add in 6 hours for sleep and 2 hours a day to eat, etc. That leaves 4 hours a day to do something in NYC. Less if there is heavy traffic. No time at all for an actual life. Plus factor in 2 tanks of gas per day. This could get very expensive fast. Plus, you will wear out a new car every 3 years. You can fly but that would be rather expensive too. Instead, because a job in NYC would have to be very well paying to consider this, rent a room in NYC and go back to Portland on weekends.
