You could shift the focus of your answer to a more 'self-improvement' type of answer. "I am motivated on doing better, learning more and becoming the best person I can be. I could not do that in my prior job."

Tell em straight up, they fired you for reasoning of low performance but none of your reviews ever indicated this. You could sue for wrongful termination if they have no proof of low performance.
