It really depends on the restaurants. Some restaurants have a tipping pot, every tip made by the servers gets put in a pot and divided among everybody at the end of the day. Most restaurants don't use a cash register so the server carries around change, in this case yes the "change" does go directly to the server. But those restaurants that use a cash register require u to check out up front in this case a tip should be left on the table....However regardless, Servers do not get to keep all of the money that they earn because they are required to tip out the house...

I waited tables for years and yes they need the tip it's a thankless job so tip!

yeah. they get it. you hold all the money for the night and cash out at the end. The money you get tipped by credit card you just add that to your pot. you tip out hostess and bus boy and even the cook sometimes
