Which are you considering? Paragard? Or Mirena? I had the paragard for about a year and a half. Insertion was very painful for me. I experienced horrible cramping for at least two solid weeks out of every month, plus some pain between periods, longer, heavier periods, and I eventually developed an allergy to it and began frequently breaking out in hives. However, I also know a lot of women who've had either the paragard or mirena and been very happy with them. It's why I gave the paragard a try. I've talked to far more women that are happy with their IUDs than aren't. The only way you'll know how your specific body will react is to have one put in. You should expect, at best, some discomfort during insertion. At worst, it could be very painful. Plan on cramping while your body adjusts. The paragard, which does not contain hormones and is good for about ten years, is like to result in some degree of increased cramping, and longer, heavier periods. For most women it's not too bad, and should lessen after a few months. The mirena contains hormones, and is good for five years. Initially it can cause irregular bleeding and some cramping, but those should stop after a couple of months and you should see lighter or non-existent periods with reduced cramping once your body has adjusted.
